Hacking and art

I love how the word hacker is slowly acquiring connotations of the word artist. Creating art with computers isn’t really new (depending on your definition of art), but computers are definitely being associated with art more and more. A Wikipedia entry for Hacker Artist was created in 2006.

The image above is a page from a book showing artwork from the Context Free Art Gallery: code on the left, the result on the right. Context Free is free software that generates images from written instructions expressed as sets of rules.

I’ve been sketching a bit lately (to use their parlance) with Processing. From their website: Processing is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to program images, animation, and interactions. One of the first things I did was use it to create the intros for my screencasts on Photodoto.com.

Here’s something more artful done with Processing:

I’ve been following Jim Bumgardner’s blog for a couple of years. If you are interested in this whole computers+art thing you should subscribe. He recently had a few pieces in the Data+Art show in Pasadena. Don’t miss the fun stuff on his site.

Also, Hackety.org. Beautiful little blog about all that is artful in hacking.

If you know of any other resources in this vein, please share in the comments. Thanks!
